Core Curriculum
Campers are divided into groups based on their experience within the Camp Spin Off Core Curriculum. Classes are tailored for first year campers, and return campers. The groups rotate within Camp Spin Off’s Core Classes:
• DJ Class
• Music Production
• Music Business
• The DJ Lab
DJ Class
Scratch DJ Academy provides instruction using their proven copyrighted curriculum on vinyl turntables alongside DJ controllers. Campers will work off of vinyl, as well as a variety of digital DJ software.
During a camper’s week at camp, the DJ instructional class goes over basic music structure. The class leads up to the fundamentals of scratching, mixing and putting together your own DJ set. Everyone will take part in group challenges as well as individual practice time to perfect your craft.
Music Production
As a group, campers work on a music throughout their stay at the camp. Some projects include sampling specific songs to recreate a completely different song, producing a remix, or creating original samples to work with. Each group then collaborates to produce their project, including applying vocals and original beats. Projects are presented on the last day of camp!
Music Business
“I know how to DJ, so how do I get paid?” First, we must walk before we run! The Music Business class gives campers Business101 from the music perspective. The class is taught by a rotating line up of leading music industry executives. Guest speakers will discuss how to use social media appropriately to promote yourself, goal setting, negotiation and more!
The DJ Lab
The DJ Lab is where campers cook up their mixes! This class is designed for campers to apply the techniques and lessons they learn in the DJ Class while diving deeper into the craft of being a DJ. Lessons are taught from a “inside the DJ booth” perspective.
